Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are continuing the investigation into an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on Thursday (2/17) in Beaver Dam. At 2:24 PM, Deputies received notification of an active pursuit in Utah that could transition into Mohave County on Highway 91. Deputies responded to the area of Highway 91 and E. Biasi Ranch Rd. where the suspect, identified as Oscar Alcantara, 30, exited the vehicle holding a young child and a handgun and fled into the desert.

Responding officers from Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, St. George Police Department, and Washington City Police Department set up containment and established communication with Alcantara by phone. Alcantara refused to let the child go and was observed pointing the weapon at the child. At this point, a member of the St. George Police Department Tactical Team shot and killed the suspect. The child was unharmed, but was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Detectives responded to the scene to begin a thorough investigation. Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that Washington City Detectives were attempting follow-up contact with a suspect from a disorderly conduct incident where a firearm was brandished. The investigation led detectives to an address in St. George, UT, where Alcantara was observed leaving as a passenger inside of a small SUV. Washington City Detectives made a traffic stop on the vehicle when the female driver exited the SUV. The female, who was an acquaintance of the suspect, told detectives that Alcantara was in the back seat with a gun and a young child. Alcantara then entered the driver’s seat and fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed. The pursuit continued on through St. George, Santa Clara, Ivins and onto Old 91 into Mohave County.

This investigation is ongoing.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating an Officer Involved Shooting incident that occurred on Thursday (2/17) afternoon. The area north of Highway 91 and E. Biasi Ranch Rd. in Beaver Dam is currently restricted. Please be aware of law enforcement vehicles in the area. Schools that were previously placed in lockdown status as a precaution have been removed from lock down. This investigation is ongoing. More information will be released as it becomes available.
